It is reported, that the South Korean non-nuclear submarine SS 079 Hong Beom-do of the KSS II type (a licensed German project 214) was almost completely destroyed in a fire on April 9 while undergoing repairs at the HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) facility in Ulsan. One of the shipyard workers died in the fire. According to preliminary investigation results, the fire severely damaged the inside of the submarine's hull, and it cannot be repaired.
The total damage is preliminarily estimated at 1 trillion won (676 million dollars). It is claimed that HHI will not be able to cover the losses to the South Korean Ministry of Defense, as insurance only covers half of the damage. Hong Beom-do was the seventh of the nine KSS II-type submarines built, and was built at the same HHI shipyard in Ulsan and commissioned by the South Korean Navy in January 2018.
